Saint Thomas Mount, known locally as Parangimalai, is a neighbourhood in south-west Chennai named after the hill at its centre. On a map the hill forms a small raised island, with roads curling around its base. Around it, cantonment land, railway tracks and busy residential streets fill the space up to the airport's edge.
Tradition holds that Thomas the Apostle was martyred on the hill, and a church on the summit has long drawn pilgrims. The area also has a strong military presence, including the Officers Training Academy, whose grounds appear as large open spaces on the plan.
