Salsomaggiore Terme lies in the province of Parma, where the Po plain begins to rise into the first hills of the Apennines. The town sits in a small valley, and on a map its streets curve to follow the terrain instead of running on a grid. Avenues, parks and hotel gardens loosen the centre, and roads climb into the wooded slopes around it.
The town owes its existence to its salt-rich thermal waters, which turned it into a fashionable spa resort from the late nineteenth century. Its best-known building, the Terme Berzieri, is a showpiece of Italian Liberty and Art Deco design. For decades Salsomaggiore also hosted the national Miss Italia pageant, which made its name familiar across the country.
