Samthar is a town in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh, in the historic region of Bundelkhand. It was once the seat of a princely state, and that past still gives the town its identity. From above, it looks like many old towns of the region: a dense, irregular core of lanes, with roads radiating into the surrounding agricultural land.
The countryside around Samthar is largely flat, divided into fields, with ponds and water tanks appearing as small patches of water on the map. Beyond the dense centre, newer houses stretch along the roads. The overall picture is compact, and the entire town fits neatly into a single frame.
