Sanjiao is in the southern part of the Chongqing municipality, where the land rises into rolling, steep hills. From above, the town's streets gather wherever the valleys leave enough flat ground, and the roads leading out twist to follow the terrain. Few lines are straight. Almost every route bends around a slope or follows a stream.
This part of Chongqing is known for its difficult topography. Towns tend to be compact, with buildings packed into the usable land and farmland stepped up the hillsides around them. On a map that shows as a dense core surrounded by lighter, meandering tracks that climb and fall with the ground.
