Santa Helena is a town in the north of Maranhão, in low-lying country not far inland from the Atlantic coast. On the map it appears as a modest cluster of streets around a central area, and the urban edge quickly gives way to open land. Water is never far away in this region, and rivers and wet ground shape the countryside around the town.
