Santa Paula lies in Ventura County, California, in the valley of the Santa Clara River. For generations it was known for its citrus orchards and has long called itself the Citrus Capital of the World. It is also where the Union Oil Company was founded in 1890, and the original company building now houses the California Oil Museum.
On a map the town sits in a clear, narrow setting. The Santa Clara River runs along its southern side, and hills rise to the north. Between them, the historic downtown is laid out in a tidy grid, and orchards and farmland extend east and west along the valley, crossed by the main highway that links the coast to inland towns.
