São José do Belmonte lies in the sertão of Pernambuco, the semi-arid interior of north-eastern Brazil. The town is compact, with its streets laid out in a simple, mostly regular pattern around the church and main square. Past the last blocks, roads head out as single lines across open country covered in caatinga scrub and farmland.
The town is best known for its connection to the Pedra do Reino, a rock formation in the surrounding countryside linked to a messianic movement of the 1830s. That story later inspired Ariano Suassuna's novel on the subject, and today it is remembered with an annual horseback procession, the Cavalgada à Pedra do Reino, which draws riders and visitors from across the region.
