Sendhwa is in the Barwani district of south-western Madhya Pradesh, close to the border with Maharashtra. The town sits on the old Mumbai–Agra road, now a national highway, and that long straight road runs through the map as its spine. Traffic and trade along it have shaped the town's growth for a long time.
The land around Sendhwa belongs to the Satpura range, and low hills rise near the town. It serves as a market centre for the surrounding villages, many of them Adivasi communities, and for the cotton grown in the region. The older part of town has narrow, twisting lanes, while newer areas spread along the highway.
Sendhwa also has an old fort, a reminder that this route through the hills has been important for centuries. A Sendhwa map poster shows the highway cutting straight through, the dense old centre beside it and the hilly country closing in around the town.
