Seonghwan lies in the northern part of Cheonan, in South Chungcheong Province. From above, its outline follows the transport corridor that links Seoul with the south: the Gyeongbu railway line and major roads run past the town, and the streets arrange themselves along them in a narrow, practical grid.
Around the centre, the map changes character quickly. Newer apartment blocks and small factories give way to rectangular paddy fields, irrigation channels and wooded hillsides that rise in soft patches. Seonghwan station connects the town to the wider rail network, and the settlement's shape has long been tied to the line.
