Sewon lies in Bantul Regency, just south of the city of Yogyakarta, on the central Javanese plain. From above, it is a patchwork: clusters of houses and narrow village lanes separated by rice fields and small plots. Main roads run south from the city toward the coast.
The district is home to ISI Yogyakarta, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts. Its campus brings students in painting, dance, music and craft to the area. That link to Yogyakarta's arts scene, together with the rural setting, gives Sewon a character quite different from the dense city just to the north.
