Shamsābād is a town in Agra district, Uttar Pradesh, a short distance south of the city of Agra. The landscape belongs to the broad plain of the Yamuna basin, flat and intensively farmed. From above the town is a compact knot of lanes, with a central market area and roads leading out toward neighbouring villages and the district headquarters.
Because the ground is so level, the map is shaped almost entirely by human lines: the main roads, the narrow lanes of the older quarters, field boundaries and the ponds that serve the surrounding farmland.
