Shanghuang lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing, where the land rises in long ridges and the roads have to work hard to get anywhere. From above, the town looks like a compact cluster of streets pressed into a valley. The built-up area stretches along the lowest, flattest ground, and the slopes around it stay mostly empty on the map.
The road network explains the terrain better than any contour line. Main routes follow the watercourses, bend to stay level and switch back when they have to climb. The few side streets branch off at short intervals and stop where the gradient becomes too steep. It is a plan shaped by the land rather than drawn on a board, and it stays clear even at small print sizes.
