Shangkou lies on the flat plain of north-central Shandong, not far inland from Laizhou Bay. The land here is low and nearly level. From above, the town shows as a compact core of streets and low buildings. Around it, long field boundaries, irrigation ditches and village clusters repeat almost to the horizon.
This part of Weifang prefecture is known across China for intensive farming, especially vegetable growing. Much of the surrounding land is used for crops and greenhouses, which form fine, regular stripes in aerial imagery. Towns such as Shangkou act as local centres for markets, schools and services for the villages around them.
