Sholinganallur lies in the south of Chennai, along Rajiv Gandhi Salai, better known as the Old Mahabalipuram Road or OMR. On a map the area is long and linear. The OMR runs straight north to south, the Buckingham Canal runs close by, and the East Coast Road and the Bay of Bengal lie a short distance to the east.
Over the past two decades the district has grown into a major hub of Chennai's IT corridor. From above, large office campuses and apartment complexes stand next to older village streets. To the west, the wetlands of the Pallikaranai marsh break up the built-up area and give the map a large, irregular open space.
