Sholinghur lies in northern Tamil Nadu, in Ranipet district, where granite hills rise abruptly out of the farmland. The town is best known for its hilltop temple dedicated to Yoga Narasimha, one of the important Vaishnavite shrines in the region. Pilgrims reach it by climbing more than a thousand steps up the rock, and a smaller shrine stands on a neighbouring hill.
On the map, the town spreads across the flat ground below the hills. Its streets gather around the main roads and temple approaches, forming a moderately dense centre with residential lanes around it. The hills themselves appear as blank or lightly marked areas beside the built-up grid, with the stairway path winding up to the summit.
