Silapathar lies in Dhemaji district on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, in a flat and fertile stretch of Upper Assam close to the border with Arunachal Pradesh. The town's streets gather around its railway station and main road, with markets and houses forming a compact core that quickly gives way to paddy fields, bamboo groves and village clusters.
Water defines this landscape. Rivers coming down from the hills to the north spread into braided channels across the plain on their way to the Brahmaputra, and seasonal flooding is part of life in the district. On the map these channels and wetlands form broad, soft shapes around the tighter streets of town, showing how closely settlement and river live together here.
