Silistra lies on the Danube where the river marks the border between Bulgaria and Romania, and the map shows the town stretched along its southern bank. The riverfront is lined with a long park, while the centre spreads inland in a fairly regular grid, rebuilt and extended over the past two centuries.
This is one of the oldest towns in the country. As the Roman Durostorum, it was an important fortress on the empire's Danube frontier, and remains of the ancient city are still found in the centre. On the hill south of town, the nineteenth-century Ottoman fortress Medzhidi Tabia appears as a compact geometric outline.
A short drive west of town, the Srebarna nature reserve, a lake and wetland protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site, adds a large patch of water to any wider view of the area. A Silistra map poster brings together river, fortress and streets, a portrait of a border town with a long memory.
