Silla lies a short distance south of Valencia, where the irrigated farmland of the Horta Sud meets the rice paddies around the Albufera lagoon. On the map the town is a dense, compact core crossed by the main road and the railway heading south. A patchwork of small fields, irrigation channels and farm tracks spreads out on every side.
The municipality reaches the Albufera Natural Park, one of the largest coastal lagoons in Spain and the traditional home of Valencian rice growing. An old defensive tower in the town centre recalls its medieval past, and the network of ditches around it still follows the logic of centuries of irrigation.
A Silla map poster shows a town defined by what surrounds it. The streets gather tightly around the historic centre, road and rail pass straight through, and beyond them the flat land dissolves into a fine grid of fields and water channels.
