Sītāmarhi is in the Mithila region of northern Bihar, on the level alluvial plain that runs from the Ganges up to the Himalayan foothills. From above, the town is a dense cluster of lanes and markets set among fields, ponds and orchards. Roads lead out in several directions toward neighbouring towns and toward the Nepal border to the north.
Hindu tradition holds that Sita, the heroine of the Ramayana, was born here, and pilgrims come to Punaura Dham and other sites linked to her story. The Lakhandei river flows past the town. Streams across the wider district swell during the monsoon, and that seasonal pattern has shaped where people build.
