Skierniewice lies in central Poland, roughly between Warsaw and Łódź, and its map is shaped by the railway. The historic Warsaw–Vienna line runs through the town, with the station and its tracks cutting a long straight line across the grid. The streets of the centre sit on one side, and later housing estates spread out around them.
The small Łupia River flows through the town, bordered by green areas. Beside it is the palace of the archbishops of Gniezno, set in a large park with ponds and avenues that forms a distinctive green shape on the map. Horticultural research institutes and experimental orchards occupy land around the town.
