Sleman is the regency that stretches north from the city of Yogyakarta toward the slopes of Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. On the map, it reads as a gradual incline: dense suburbs near the city, then villages and rice fields, then forested slopes and river valleys running down from the summit.
Much of Yogyakarta's everyday life happens in Sleman. The main campus of Universitas Gadjah Mada, one of Indonesia's leading universities, lies here, along with many other colleges. The ring road loops through the southern part of the regency, and long, straight roads such as the route to Kaliurang run north toward the mountain.
A Sleman map poster captures this link between city and volcano. Rivers such as the Code flow south in parallel lines, carrying water and, at times, volcanic debris from Merapi. To the east, the regency includes part of the Prambanan temple area, so the map also touches one of Java's most famous historic sites.
