Soledade stands on the high plateau of northern Rio Grande do Sul, a rolling landscape of ridges, fields and shallow valleys. The town's centre follows a mostly regular grid, but the terrain shows through: streets tilt over the ridges, blocks bend where the slope changes, and the edges stretch out along the main roads.
The town is known in Brazil as the capital of precious stones. For generations the region has been associated with agate and amethyst, and Soledade has become an important centre for cutting, polishing and trading gemstones. The industry has left its mark in workshops and warehouses throughout the town, though the map itself keeps things simple.
Main roads, including federal highway BR-386, cross the town and connect it to the rest of the state. Outside the urban area, farms and streams make up the pattern. A Soledade map poster gives a clear, restrained view of a town whose reputation is for colour and polished stone.
