Spišská Nová Ves is built around one of the largest town squares in Slovakia. It is a long, lens-shaped space, wide in the middle and narrowing at each end, with buildings standing on an island down its centre. On a map it reads at once as a spindle laid through the old town, with rows of burgher houses along both sides.
The Church of the Assumption stands on that square, and its tower is often cited as the tallest church tower in Slovakia. Around the historic core, later housing estates and industrial areas spread out in blockier shapes. The Hornád river runs along the town's edge, adding a soft, curving line against the streets.
South of the town the land rises into the Slovak Paradise National Park, known for its gorges, ladders and wooded ridges, and Spišská Nová Ves is one of the usual starting points for visits.
