Stephenville is the seat of Erath County in north-central Texas, southwest of Fort Worth. Its centre follows a classic Texas pattern: a courthouse square with a grid of streets around it, then residential blocks, and further out, commercial strips along the highways. The North Bosque River runs through town and adds a winding green line to the map.
Tarleton State University, part of the Texas A&M University System, has a large campus in town, visible as a separate cluster of buildings, lawns and parking. Stephenville calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World, a title tied to the many professional rodeo cowboys from the area, and Erath County is one of the leading dairy counties in Texas.
