Sumter lies in the Midlands of South Carolina, on flat to gently rolling ground typical of the inner coastal plain. The map shows a compact historic downtown laid out on a grid, with Main Street at its core, surrounded by neighbourhoods that loosen into curving suburban streets and then fields and pine woods.
The city is named after Thomas Sumter, a general of the American Revolution, and its nickname, the Gamecock City, comes from him. Shaw Air Force Base lies to the west, and its long runways and base grounds form one of the largest geometric features in the surrounding area.
Swan Lake Iris Gardens is Sumter's best-known landmark, a park of black-water lakes and plantings known for hosting all eight species of swan. On a Sumter map poster the gardens appear as a cluster of irregular water shapes near the town, a soft counterpoint to the regular streets of the centre.
