Surrey is built on a grid that seems to go on forever. Numbered streets run north to south and numbered avenues run east to west across a large territory, from the Fraser River in the north to the saltwater of Boundary Bay and Semiahmoo Bay in the south. Inside that frame, winding residential crescents and cul-de-sacs fill the spaces between the arterial roads.
Rather than one downtown, Surrey grew as a set of town centres, including City Centre around the SkyTrain terminus, Guildford, Newton, Fleetwood, Cloverdale and South Surrey. Large areas of protected farmland remain within the city limits, and the ravines and creek valleys crossing the grid add green corridors. It is now the second most populous city in British Columbia.
A Surrey map poster shows these two scales working together. The strict grid of arterial roads provides structure, while the curving suburban streets and wooded ravines inside each square give the print texture. The Fraser River across the top and the bays along the south give the composition natural edges.

The river forms Surrey's northern boundary, with bridges crossing to the rest of Metro Vancouver. Its wide curve anchors the top of the composition.
Semiahmoo and Boundary Bay
To the south, the land meets the shallow tidal bays near the border. The coastline adds soft, open shapes to an otherwise gridded city.
