This Taiping lies in the countryside of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly terrain of the eastern Sichuan Basin. There is little flat land here, and the map shows it. Roads do not run straight. They bend around slopes and follow valley floors, and the town's streets fit into whatever level ground is available.
Taiping is one of many small towns in the region that share this name. Its layout is typical of rural Chongqing. There is a compact centre along one or two main streets, with newer buildings stretching out along the roads. The surrounding land is divided into small fields and scattered settlements, following the shape of the hills.
