Taitou lies on the level ground of northern Shandong, in the wide lowland that stretches toward the Yellow River delta and the Bohai coast. The land here is almost completely flat, and it shows on the map: straight roads, rectangular blocks and field boundaries that run in long, parallel lines toward the horizon.
Like many towns on the North China Plain, Taitou combines an older core with newer districts built along wide avenues. Farmland, drainage channels and village clusters surround the built-up area, so the edge of the town is marked by a change in texture rather than by hills or a coastline.

Field patterns
