Taixing is a county-level city in Jiangsu province, administered by Taizhou, on the northern bank of the Yangtze River where it widens toward its estuary. The land here is low and flat, part of the river's alluvial plain. Canals and drainage channels run across it in every direction, dividing the countryside into long, narrow fields.
From above, the urban area is compact, with an older centre marked by narrow streets and waterways, surrounded by newer districts built on wide straight avenues. Toward the Yangtze the map changes character. The riverside is lined with industrial zones, port facilities and embankments that hold back one of the largest rivers in the world.
Taixing is widely known for its ginkgo trees and has long been associated with ginkgo cultivation in China.
