Tamboril is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in Brazil's northeast, well away from the Atlantic coast. The landscape here is the sertão, a semi-arid region of low scrub, seasonal rivers and wide horizons. On a map the town appears as a compact cluster of streets, with rural roads and tracks leading out across a largely open territory.
Life in this part of Ceará has long been shaped by the rhythm of the rainy and dry seasons, and many small reservoirs, known locally as açudes, dot the surrounding land. Watercourses that carry water only part of the year appear as faint lines, while the town itself gathers around a church square in the manner common to northeastern Brazilian towns.
