Tashan is a town in the far north of Jiangsu province, within the Xuzhou area close to the borders of Shandong and Anhui. It lies on the broad plain between the Yellow River and Huai River systems, a landscape that has been farmed intensively for centuries, and on a map the town appears as a compact settlement set in a patchwork of fields.
The street network is simple and legible. A few main roads carry traffic through the town, lined with shops and public buildings, and smaller lanes lead off to residential blocks and older village cores. Around the town, field boundaries, irrigation ditches and tree-lined roads divide the land into rectangles, with neighbouring villages scattered across the plain.
