Taufkirchen lies just south of Munich in the Hachinger valley. It is part of a chain of communities along the Hachinger Bach, a small stream that runs north toward the city. From above, the older village areas sit near the stream, while larger residential estates and business areas spread across the flat gravel plain around Munich.
The S-Bahn line to Munich passes through the municipality, and its stations anchor the streets around them. The map mixes several textures: winding lanes in the older parts, long blocks of mid- and late-twentieth-century housing, and the larger footprints of schools and offices. Main roads connect the town with neighbouring Unterhaching and Oberhaching.
