Tezpur lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam, and the river shapes everything about its map. The broad, braided channel runs along the southern side of the town, and the long Kolia Bhomora Setu crosses it. Inside the town, small hills and scattered ponds interrupt the street pattern, so roads curve and bend instead of forming a regular grid.
The town is linked to the legend of Usha, daughter of the demon king Bana, and Aniruddha, grandson of Krishna. The name is often explained as city of blood, after the battle said to have followed their story, and the hill of Agnigarh is associated with Usha's fortress. Tezpur is also known for its parks, its university and its important military base.
