Thiene lies in the province of Vicenza, where the Venetian plain meets the first slopes rising toward the Asiago plateau. The historic centre is compact and irregular, with the main square and the fifteenth-century Castello di Thiene at the heart of the old town. On the map, newer districts spread out in a looser pattern on every side.
The town has long been an industrial and commercial centre for the upper Vicentino, with a tradition in textiles and manufacturing. Its position made it a natural crossroads, and several main roads meet here, coming from the plain and from the valleys to the north, where the mountains rise not far away.
