Tīkamgarh is in Madhya Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region of central India. The rulers of Orchha moved their capital here in the late eighteenth century, and the town kept that role until Indian independence. From above it forms a dense old centre, with roads leading out across a landscape of rocky ground, fields and scattered water bodies.
Bundelkhand is known for its tanks, the artificial lakes built over centuries to hold monsoon water, and the Tīkamgarh area has many of them. They show on the map as irregular shapes of water beside the town and villages. Close by is the Kundeshwar temple, a well-known place of pilgrimage in the district.
