Tirupattur is in northern Tamil Nadu, near the border with Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In 2019, it became the headquarters of the new Tirupattur district. The town lies in a broad basin, with the Jawadhu Hills to the south and the Yelagiri hills not far to the north.
On the map, the dense old centre is marked by narrow streets, with newer neighbourhoods extending along the roads leading out of town. Tanks, the traditional water reservoirs common in the region, appear as irregular shapes among the fields and help break up the pattern of lanes.
