Tongliao Map Poster & Print
Tongliao lies in eastern Inner Mongolia, on the broad Horqin plain where farmland gives way to grassland and sandy ground. The West Liao River passes the city in a wide, shallow valley, and its channels and floodplain set a soft southern edge to the urban area. North of the river the streets form a large, even grid of long avenues. The layout reflects a city that grew fast as a rail and trade junction.
The surrounding Horqin area is known for its Mongol heritage and for decades of work to stabilise sandy land with shelterbelts and new planting. On a map those efforts appear as straight tree lines and field boundaries on the plain around the city. The railways meeting here link Tongliao with Shenyang, Beijing and northern Inner Mongolia.
