Traunstein is the main town of the Chiemgau region in southeastern Bavaria, between Lake Chiemsee and the Salzburg border. The old town stands on high ground above the river Traun. Its large market square, the Stadtplatz, sits at the heart of a compact historic core, and the land falls away steeply to the river valley below.
Salt shaped the town's history. From the seventeenth century, brine was carried by pipeline from Bad Reichenhall to a saltworks in Traunstein, and the former saltworks quarter is still part of the town. Traunstein is also known for the Georgiritt, a traditional Easter Monday procession of horses and riders. Today the town reaches out across the valley and up the surrounding slopes.
