Tres Valles is in southern Veracruz, in the low, fertile country of the Papaloapan basin. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks, typical of Mexican towns, with a central square and streets laid out at right angles. Beyond the last houses, the map opens onto wide agricultural land crossed by roads, tracks and waterways.
Sugarcane is central to the local economy, and the surrounding fields give the landscape its broad, regular pattern. Streams and drainage channels wind through the flat terrain towards the river system of the basin, adding soft curves to a place otherwise defined by straight lines.
