Unije lies in the Kvarner Gulf off the Croatian coast, the largest of the small islands west of Lošinj. It is low and gently rolling, its surface divided into old fields and olive groves by dry stone walls, with a coast of small coves and rocky points. There are no towns in the usual sense, only a single village and a scattering of paths across the land.
The village of Unije gathers around a bay on the western shore, a tight cluster of houses and lanes looking out toward the open Adriatic. Beyond it, the island's network thins to tracks between former fields and groves. Neighbouring Susak and the Srakane islets sit nearby, adding small outlines to the surrounding sea and giving the island company on the page.
