Urandi is a municipality in the south-west of Bahia, in Brazil's interior, not far from the border with Minas Gerais. The town itself is small and compact. From above, it shows a modest grid of streets around a central square, with roads leading out across open, semi-arid country. The surrounding land is a mix of scrub, pasture and farmed plots, with higher ground in the distance.
Life here follows the rhythm of the sertão interior: agriculture, cattle and the local trade that serves a wide rural area. Like many towns in this part of Bahia, the settlement feels small against the scale of the landscape, and the roads between towns are long and sparse.
