Uruaçu is a town in northern Goiás, in the heart of Brazil's cerrado, and on the map it appears as a tidy grid of blocks laid across gently rolling ground. The main highway corridor brushes past it, and the street pattern extends outward in regular squares that loosen into ranch roads and open country at the edges.
The defining feature of the wider area is the Serra da Mesa reservoir, a vast lake formed by damming the Tocantins River. Its shoreline is extraordinarily irregular, pushing long arms into every valley, so that water and land interlock in branching shapes that look almost like a tree or a river delta drawn in reverse.
