Utraula is a town in Balrampur district, in the northeast of Uttar Pradesh, on the low plains that run toward the Nepal foothills. The country around it is flat and agricultural, divided into small fields, and from above it looks like a fine mesh of paths, ponds and village clusters with the town at the densest point.
The centre has the compact, irregular layout of an older market town, where lanes bend and narrow rather than following a grid. Main roads leave the centre in several directions, linking Utraula to neighbouring towns and villages, and newer building has spread along them in thin ribbons.
