Vacaria is in the Campos de Cima da Serra, the high plateau of northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. The town sits on rolling grassland at a fairly high altitude, and on the map a compact grid of streets gives way on every side to long roads leading out across the open country.
The surrounding land is used for cattle ranching and, more recently, for fruit growing. Vacaria is one of Brazil's main apple-producing areas, and orchards now cover large parts of the plateau. The cooler climate here, with frosty winters, sets it apart from much of the country.
The town's name recalls its ranching origins, and the Rodeio Crioulo Internacional, a large gaúcho rodeo, has been held here for decades. A Vacaria map poster shows the town as an orderly cluster of blocks in a wide landscape, with roads spreading out toward the farms of the serra.
