Valdepeñas is in the south of Ciudad Real province, on the high, open plain of La Mancha. The land around it is flat and dry, and much of it is planted with vines. The town's name is attached to one of Spain's best-known wine designations, and wineries appear among the streets as large courtyards and warehouses, not just in the countryside.
At the centre is the Plaza de España, a square lined with arcaded buildings, and the historic streets spread out from it in a fairly compact grid. The A-4 motorway between Madrid and Andalusia passes along the edge of town and forms a strong line on the map. The town is also remembered for its resistance to French troops in 1808.
