Vallam is in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu, a short distance west of Thanjavur. The land here differs from the flat, irrigated delta to the east. Vallam sits on slightly higher, drier ground, and the map shows it. Instead of a dense network of canals and paddy strips, the town is surrounded by more open land crossed by roads.
The town's streets gather along the main road toward Thanjavur and then spread out into residential lanes and institutional campuses. Large compounds appear on the map as broad, lightly built areas with internal paths. Farther out, the pattern breaks into individual plots and tracks.
