Vassouras sits in the hills of the Paraíba do Sul valley, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state. The historic centre is built around a long, sloping square, with the parish church at the top. Streets radiate from the square and then bend to follow the hillsides. Beyond the old town, the map opens into green hills and scattered neighbourhoods.
In the nineteenth century, Vassouras was one of the wealthiest centres of Brazil's coffee economy, and the planters' townhouses and rural estates from that era still define its character. Its historic centre is protected as national heritage. The coffee wealth was built on enslaved labour, and that history is part of how the town is remembered today.
