Vechelde lies on the flat, fertile land west of Braunschweig, on the way toward Peine. The municipality is made up of the main village and a ring of smaller villages, so the map shows several compact settlements spaced across open fields rather than one continuous town.
Water lines add structure. The Mittelland Canal, one of Germany's main inland waterways, runs across the area in a long straight course, while the small Aue river winds through the fields in a far looser line. Roads and the railway toward Braunschweig tie the villages together.
