Vera Cruz is a municipality on Itaparica Island, in the Bay of All Saints in Bahia. The island is divided between Vera Cruz and the municipality of Itaparica, and Vera Cruz covers most of its length, including the side facing the open Atlantic. Across the water lies Salvador, reached by ferry.
On the map, the coastline defines everything. Settlements line the shore in a string of beach villages, with streets running parallel to the water and short lanes reaching down to the sand. Inland, roads cut through greenery toward the other coast, and the island's outline is broken by bays and inlets.
