Vettavalam is a town in the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, in the interior of the state, west of the coast at Puducherry. On a map it appears as a dense core of streets near low, rocky hills, surrounded by flat agricultural land. The pattern of small fields and irrigation channels is typical of this part of southern India.
A defining feature of the landscape around Vettavalam, as across much of Tamil Nadu, is its tanks, the reservoirs built to store monsoon rain for irrigation. On the map they appear as irregular water bodies set in the fields. The town has old temples and a history tied to a local zamindari estate, visible in the older, narrower streets of the centre.
